Season 2008/2009

Brownhills Community Colts v Walsall Wood FC

16th November 2008

The game started very evenly with few opportunities falling to either side within the opening few minutes. The first real chance fell to Chris Bullock on 11 minutes when he found himself clean through on goal with just the keeper to beat, Chris tried to lift the ball over the keeper but unfortunately it didn’t quite come off and the keeper managed to make a good stop. Walsall had a good opportunity to take the lead in the 17th minute when they broke through the Brownhills defence leaving
Jack Beardsmore on a one-to-one with the Walsall forward, Jack however made an excellent diving save to his right to push the ball wide of the post. A minute later Chris Bullock hit a stinging shot from just outside the box forcing the Walsall keeper to make a save. In the 25th minute a long throw from Chris Bullock fell to Joe Wilson’s feet, Joe put the ball through to Luke Barlow, Luke turned and hit a first time shot at goal, however once again the Walsall keeper was well placed to hold onto the ball and deny Brownhills. Almost immediately Walsall hit Brownhills on the break and were unlucky not to take the lead when they hit Jack Beardsmore’s near post. In the 29th minute Walsall were awarded a free kick just outside the Brownhills box after the referee had judged that a Walsall player had been unfairly crowded out off the ball. The Brownhills wall tried to cover the goal however the Walsall player managed to hit a great shot past the wall, beating Jack Beardsmore and into the net to take the lead. Brownhills battled for the remainder of the first half with Amrit Khela leading by example however Brownhills went in at the break 1 – 0 down.

Half time: Brownhills  0 – 1  Walsall Wood FC

Walsall Wood came out in the second half with some real purpose, taking the game to Brownhills and within a couple of minutes had the ball in the back of the net, fortunately it didn’t count as it was ruled offside. The ball was in the Brownhills net again a minute later and once again, fortunately for Brownhills, ruled offside. JJ Cyster, Stephen Sutton, Luke Powell and Mark Styles were really struggling in defence to keep Walsall out as Walsall continued to pile the pressure on. In the 45th minute Amrit Khela put a nice ball through to Mathew Slade, Mathew took it past a defender and hit a shot at goal beating the keeper, unfortunately for Brownhills there was a Walsall defender on the goal line who made a good clearance preventing that eqalising goal. A minute later Brownhills were hit with a devastating blow when Walsall extended their lead; a cross was met by a Walsall forward who made no mistake of it, planting it into the back of the net. Walsall’s victory was sealed in the 65th minute when they were awarded and scored a penalty after one of their players had been brought down just inside the box. Amrit Khela nearly scored a consolation goal when he made a wonderful solo run right from the halfway line, his final shot however being saved by the extremely good Walsall Wood keeper. Brownhills had been equal to Walsall in the first half however Walsall had edged it in the second with some excellent play.

Final score: Brownhills  0 – 3  Walsall Wood FC
